AI Singapore (AISG) is offering two Postdoctoral Fellowships to work in its AI Governance pillar. Candidates building a career in the area of AI Governance (broadly understood) are encouraged to apply. Successful applicants will become Fellows of AISG, with the possibility of affiliation with another Faculty of NUS.

Successful candidates will commence their Fellowships in Nov 2023 and conclude them in Oct 2024. In this iteration of the Fellowship, a later start date is possible.

Research Areas (non-exhaustive)

  • Fairness — Ensure that the benefits of AI are properly shared among the community (Bias detection & prevention)
  • Transparency/explainability — Ensure that systems appropriately enable those affected to understand the process in general and a specific outcome in particular (Transparency tools; explainability standards & measures)
  • Safety & Security — Ensure that AI systems are safe to use and appropriately protected against hacking and data breaches (Safety certification; Data protection & cybersecurity)
  • Accountability — Ensure that AI systems are properly regulated – minimizing risk and properly allocating losses (Liability and compensation framework)
  • Ethics & human-centricity — Ensure that AI serves the interests of the broader community (Values and trust in AI)

Benefits

  • Fellows will be appointed to the full-time position of Post-Doctoral Fellow at AISG on a one-year contract (with the possibility of re-appointment up to a maximum term of 2 years, subject to re-application and consideration by the selection committee), and with a fixed remuneration of S$84,000. This all-in sum is inclusive of stipends for housing and living expenses.
  • Fellows will be reimbursed for a return economy class airfare (by the most economical and direct route) up to a maximum of S$2,000 to and from Singapore (if applicable)
  • Fellows will be allocated a Research and Conference Fund allowance of S$3,000 to support attendance at academic conferences.
  • Fellows will be allocated a seat at AISG’s office.
  • Fellows will be given the opportunity to present their research at AISG as well as in Faculty-based research seminars.

Selection Criteria

  • Applicant must be of exceptional calibre, having attained a doctoral degree in a relevant area of research, which must have been completed and examined during the period from October 2021 to September 2023.
  • Applicants who have not been awarded the doctoral degree by the date of application but who intend to submit their doctoral thesis for examination are welcome to apply, but in these circumstances, written assurance is required from the applicant’s supervisor (and endorsed by the awarding institution) that there is a reasonable expectation that the doctoral degree will be awarded.
  • Applicant must hold a doctoral degree by the time of appointment.
  • The principal selection criterion will be the applicant’s potential for excellence in research and the proposed programme of research of the applicant. An existing record of publication or participation in research projects is an example of evidence of such potential.

      – A curriculum vitae should be submitted containing complete and detailed information on academic institutions, honours, awards, all publications to date, and all professional experience (current and previous, including dates of employment and job descriptions).
    • A copy of your Doctoral Certificate (if applicable) or Status Letter with your application
    • Research Proposal
      – A detailed research proposal outlining the research plans including the expected results of the work, and the projected contribution to the field of inquiry should be submitted. The title of the proposal should fully indicate the nature of the research project.
    • Letters of Recommendation
      – The application should be supported by two references from academic referees. Applicants should arrange for their referees to send their references to the address below by the closing date.
