AI FOR URBAN COOLING

Singapore – South Korea Joint Grant Call

AI Singapore (AISG) and the Institute for Information & Communication Technology Planning & Evaluation (IITP), South Korea are launching a joint grant call to provide funding for research on:

AI-Assisted Multi-scale Microclimate Model(s)

The rapid growth of urban environments today aggravates the occurrence of extreme thermal conditions in cities. Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect has become a recurring phenomenon resulting in excessive heat build-ups, especially in high-density, built-up areas.

The joint grant call aims to support the development of scientific and technological cooperation between Singaporean and South Korean researchers.

The research should encompass (but is not limited to):

  • Development of AI-assisted microclimate model(s) at a district/neighbourhood scale, based on the understanding of the impact of key factors, namely, weather and climate, urban shape and morphology, and anthropogenic activity
  • Validation of numerical simulation, analytical models, and AI approaches or systems using real-world long term weather measurement or relevant anthropogenic datasets
  • AI-based design recommendations to mitigate the urban heat island effect and improve thermal comfort in high-density, urbanized areas
  • Quantification of proposed AI design recommendations in terms of societal and economic impact, e.g., carbon savings, cost savings to guide urban design

Total Grant Quantum: S$3,000,000+
Project Period: 3 years (1 Sep 2024 to 31 Aug 2027)

Eligibility

We invite applications from local Institutes of Higher Learning and Research Institutes, in collaboration with South Korean research and development organisations. To apply for the grant, the joint research team should be led by one Principal Investigator from Singapore and one from South Korea and comprise at least one industry partner from each country.

Programme Structure

AISG and IITP will support one (1) selected joint research team by funding the researchers from their corresponding countries up to S$1,500,000 and ₩1,500,000,000, respectively, over a maximum period of three (3) years.
